Fisheries Assistants - Introgression Project - Ballina [Ireland]


 

PURPOSE: The Research Fisheries Assistant will work on a project to assess the level of genetic introgression in Irish wild salmon stocks from farmed escape salmon. The role mainly involves sampling juvenile salmonids in designated rivers nationwide and collection of specimens for genetic analyses.

Main duties will include:

  • Assist with electro-fishing of juvenile salmonids in designated rivers nationwide and collection of specimens for subsequent genetic analyses.
  • Euthanasia of collected specimens.
  • Collate and input data into IFI databases and present data in report format as required. Maintain raw data and all other records in a clear concise format. Compile and maintain all records in a manner compatible with GIS.
  • Assist the Research Officer in ensuring that other elements of the programme not specifically linked to sample collection and analysis, are achieved in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provide any technical support necessary for timely delivery of the appropriate programme.
  • Liaise with other IFI staff working on related projects as required.
  • Assist with compilation and analyses of biological and physical data, e.g. prepare graphs and summaries, perform computations in numerical summaries, and cross references facts, dates and other data.
  • Other relevant duties as required


Role Specific Requirements

This role will involve extensive travelling across Ireland and conducting field work in all weather conditions. Field work will be influenced by weather; consequently the position will require flexibility regarding working hours. Transport will be provided for field duties and full Civil Service subsistence rates will be paid while working in the field or travelling.


The positions will be based in IFI’s Ballina office and travelling on a daily/weekly basis (Monday to Friday) throughout the field season will be a requirement. There may be some requirement for weekend work.




EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Experience / Qualifications

  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent with minimum Grade C on at least two Higher level papers, to include one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography or Maths
  • Have a full driving licence valid in the state
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Familiarity with working outdoors in all weather conditions

Desirable Experience / Qualifications

  • A Relevant degree or equivalent (NFQ Level 7)
  • Previous relevant experience
  • Familiarity working in water.
  • Familiarity with electric fishing/netting for fish
  • Experience using GPS and GIS software
  • Knowledge of fisheries

SALARY

The salary scale for the position is at the level of Fisheries Assistant as applies in Inland Fisheries Ireland, it is a 14 point scale including 2 long service increment (LSI’s):


Point 1 €28,303; Point 2 €29,873; Point 3 €30,780; Point 4 €32,014; Point 5 €32,986; Point 6 €33,998; Point 7 €34,739; Point 8 €35,780; Point 9 €36,648; Point 10 €37,341, Point 11 €38,376, Point 12 €39,423, Point 13 (LSI 1) €40,938, Point 14 €42,871 (LSI 2)
(IFI Grade Payscale as of 01/03/2023).


Candidates should note that salary will not be subject to negotiation and the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.
New entrants to the public sector will start on point 1.


TENURE

A short term contract is available with a duration of approximately 4 months. Anticipated start date is late June 2023, depending on project requirements.
